The weirdest cooling fan ever: Install an additional fan to cool the... fan!
What makes this fan line immediately stand out is the unique design with seven additional blades located in the center, creating a "fan within a fan" effect
Arctic, a brand specializing in the manufacture of radiators, fans, etc., has just introduced a brand new line of cooling fans for servers, named S12038-4K and S12038-8K. What makes this fan line immediately stand out is the unique design with seven additional blades located in the center, creating a "fan within a fan" effect. With its outstanding static pressure generation, it is one of the top fans for servers, although Arctic seems to be quite secretive in promoting this new product.
Impressive Specifications of S12038
The S12038 scores in many respects with its impressive spec sheet. The advertised maximum power consumption is 3.96W, which is 12% lower than the nearest competitor in the server fan segment.
This fan series produces a static pressure of 11.45 mmH₂O, which is 3 to 6 times higher than Arctic's conventional fan series. With such high pressure and airflow, the S12038 is almost the best in the server cooling fan segment. As the name suggests, the fan is available in two versions with a maximum rotation speed of 4,000 RPM or 8,000 RPM.
The S12038 uses a dual ball bearing design, instead of the usual fluid dynamic bearing. This helps to improve the operating efficiency and durability of the fan.
The additional propeller in the center of the main rotor is designed to cool the spindle, which reduces the motor temperature by 5-10°C, according to Arctic's documentation (these documents have minor differences). Arctic claims that this shaft cooling doubles the effective life of the fan.
In addition, the fan is also equipped with a dust protection sticker for the center blade, which helps protect in dusty environments. However, covering this unique propeller design can detract from the product's unique aesthetic.
Not for regular PCs
If you want to use the S12038-4K for decoration or cooling for a regular PC, be aware of some limitations. The fan has a height of 38mm, which is 11mm taller than a standard PC fan, and there is no rubber cushion to reduce noise and vibration. This causes the S12038 to produce higher noise and vibration levels, which are not suitable for setups that require quietness such as consumer fans.
Although the S12038 brings outstanding performance in the server fan segment, Arctic is not very interested in promoting this product. Arctic's Reddit social media posts are often deleted or ignored, press releases are hard to find, and few outlets report on the actual performance of the product.
At a price of $14.99 on Amazon, the S12038 series of fans is suitable for 3U+ server systems or workstations that need high static pressure. It is an ideal choice for those looking for a powerful and durable cooling solution.
